The sounds of science: how physics and music can help each other

In quantum mechanics such solutions are often made to be orthogonal, such as the energy levels of an electron. By doing so the overlap energy of the states is nullified, and the expectation value of an operator is the expectation value of the operator in the individual states, multiplied by the fraction of the superposition state that is “in” that state. The pre-eminent British composer George Benjamin also hints that the creation of music can be less mystical and more mathematical than we might assume. Benjamin – who, at 16, was compared to Mozart by Olivier Messiaen – says an amateur interest in science is his “habitual preoccupation”. Although he too had no formal science training beyond school, he says that reading books on topics as varied as “chaos theory, symmetry, the perception of time, prime numbers and code-breaking has proved unexpectedly stimulating”.

Each of these theories was experimentally tested numerous times and found to be an adequate approximation of nature. For instance, the theory of classical mechanics accurately describes the motion of objects, provided they are much larger than atoms and moving at a speed much less than the speed of light. These theories continue to be areas of active research today.

Why Is Physics (Or Any Science) Important?

Remember, the physics part of the problem is figuring out what you are solving for, drawing the diagram, and remembering the formulae. The rest is just use of algebra, trigonometry, and/or calculus, depending on the difficulty of your course. Many people report that if they leave a problem for a while and come back to it later, they find they have a new perspective on it and can sometimes see an easy way to the answer that they did not notice before. All programs require you to take classes or pass exams, but most of your work during a PhD program will be dedicated to doing research. If you’re interested in teaching at the college level or doing independent research, a PhD will prepare you for that. Work on it early on, so you can get it out of the way as soon as you can.

MECHANICS

In philosophy, you’re encouraged to stay curious about a number of things. This is a great example of how philosophy helps make connections between different areas. To put this discovery together, I needed to know a little bit about physics, but I also needed to know a little bit about language and logic, and about the history of science. People often think that philosophy has nothing to do with science, but actually, philosophy and science have everything to do with each other. In fact, for most of its history, science just was philosophy.

It’s what makes you a thinking, sentient being rather than an unfeeling mechanism. The science of consciousness has not lived up to expectations.
